ADS131M06: Crystal oscillator application

Part Number: ADS131M06

Tool/software:

I want to use the built-in oscillator is the ADS131M06 with a standard 8.192 MHz quartz crystal. However, I can't find a proper application, neither in the datasheet or anywhere else. Even the evaluation board uses an external oscillator.

Is there a list of applicable quartz crystals available, or, alternatively, a proper specification for the crystal, including ESR, load cap, etc.?

In other applications it is mandatory to use small capacitors to ground, in order to adjust for the load capaitance. Is this necessary for the ADS131 or even couner-productive? What is the built-in pin capacitance of XTAL1/XTAL2 anyway?

Many thanks,

Ralf

  • Hi Ralf,

We do not have the specifications you asked for, however we used the crystal (ABLS-8.192MHZ-K4T) and it worked well with ADS131M0x ADC. If a different crystal is used, you will have to characterize your system with it across the supply voltage and temperature to ensure a proper startup under all conditions.

Based on the design simulations, both XTAL pins of ADS131M0x have approximately 2 pF of input capacitance. Please notice that any realistic PCB traces in a circuit board will outweigh the pin capacitance. You should be able to find the load capacitance requirement for the crystal from the crystal vender.

    BR,
