ADS131M08EVM: How to use PHI on Linux?

Part Number: ADS131M08EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS131M08,

Tool/software:

We want to use the ADS131M08 in a remote sensing application, to upgrade our data stream (1000's of units).

Skeptics want some real data to help quantify the benefit.

Our quick path to capturing this real data is to use the ADS131M08EVM & PHI with our Debian 12 host.

So we bought 8 ADS131M08EVM for this purpose.

Today, the hard discovery came that unless we have Windows running the EVM App, the PHI will not apply EVM_DVDD. In fact, EVM_DVDD disappears the instant the app is quit.

Are we lost? Or is there a way to make this work?

Thanks

Clark

  • Hi Clark,

    Welcome to the E2E forum.

The EVM_DVDD from the PHI card is controlled by the EVM GUI software. Each type of ADC EVM has its own GUI software. The GUI software only enables the EVM_DVDD after the information from the EVM matches the information in the GUI software.

The GUI does not support Linux OS and also it is not easy to develop your own software without the detailed information about the PHI card, so a good solution will be using your own microcontroller and developing your own software that can operate on Linux.

When using your own microcontroller to communicate with ADS131M08EVM instead of PHI card, you can connect an external 3.3V power supply to the test point TP1 for EVM_DVDD that is actually DVDD(IOVDD) for ADS131M08. You also need an external 3.3V power supply on the pin 2 of JP12 for AVDD of the ADS131M08 unit on the EVM.

  • Dale; Thank you. The power hookup confusion I had with the datasheet has been cleared up. We are considering using the MCP2210 transceiver, unless you have another recommendation.

    cheers

  • Hi Clark,

I did not use this transceiver, but ADS131M08 works as long as the transceiver has a standard SPI interface, ADS131M08 works with 3.3V DVDD.

Let me know if you have any other question for ADS131M08, thanks.

    Dale.
