ADS8681: Using a single external reference for 4 adcs and tying REFIO pins together

Part Number: ADS8681

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am interested in using a single REF5040 reference for 4 separate ADS8681 ADCs simultaneously sampling.

According to the schematic for the evaluation module, there is a jumper from the external reference to the REFIO pin of the ADC and the instructions state that the jumper should only be connected after the ADS8681 is programmed to turn off the internal reference.

Will I damage the ADS8681 in any way if I just directly connect multiple REFIO pins together and drive it with a single external reference? I imagine it will be no problem since the potential difference will probably be in the millivolts at most but I'd like to double check.

Thanks for the help.

  • Hi Young,

Welcome to our e2e forum!  I don't think you would damage the ADS8681 in any way but I do not know how you might impact the performance of the device with tying the REF5040 directly to 4 ADS8681 devices.  We have not done any characterization or testing of that specific type of connection so do let us know how it works out in the end.

  • Hi Tom,

Thanks for the information. If I read the datasheets correctly hopefully the REF5040 should be able to supply the necessary current but I will report back if there are any issues. Thanks for the welcome.
