ADS7142: Use as standard ADC

Part Number: ADS7142
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1015L

Tool/software:

I'm looking for a single channel ADC (single ended) that operates at 1V8 I2C (moving away from 3V3 I2C with I2C level shifter). Will ADS7142 operate as a general purpose ADC? So overwhelmed by the triggering & monitoring features described by the datasheet that it's not obvious.

Will this be ok?

  • Hi Derek,

Yes, the ADS7142 is a great choice for a 12-bit, I2C ADC. The various monitoring features are not required to use. For example, If you just want to read conversion data as a minimum, you can simply follow the description in figure 56. The default configuration should be okay for your case, reducing your need to read or write to registers. Your current schematic is good, but I recommend decreasing C131 to 1nF at most if you are sampling an AC input signal at higher speeds.

Another option with 1.8V I2C support is the ADS1015L, which has a lower sampling rate. Feel free to take a look at the datasheets and let me know if you have any questions.

  • Thanks Joel, I will look at ADS1015L. That didn't some up in my search. I am surprised at the lack of I2C 1V8 ADC ICs around. I don't need fast sample rates. It is a dc voltage that will be measured hence the 100nF at C131.

    Much appreciated

    Derek

  • No problem! Out of curiosity, can you expand on the 1.8V I2C requirement over 3.3V? What kind of I2C controller are you using in your system? We would definitely like to make more of our devices compatible with 1.8V I2C based on the need.

  • Hi Joel,

We are using a AMD Ultrascale+ MPSoC which has the bank supplied with 1V8.
