THS1207: MSPS ADC waveform capture

Part Number: THS1207
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS9218, ADS9327

Tool/software:

I need to capture 2 milliseconds of data at 5MSPS or greater for 24 channels, to a microcontroller. The data capture needs to start on an external trigger pulse. Is there any design / part suggestions?

  • Hi Kan Yu,

Is the 5MSPS per channel, or shared between the 24 channels? I can check whether we have any offerings, or redirect you to the high-speed ADC team.

    Regards,
    Joel

  • 5MSPS or higher per channel

  • Hello Kan Yu,

We have several devices that can measure data at 5MSPS or greater that have an external trigger ability

    • ADS92xx family: 16/18-bit resolution, 5MSPS to 20MSPS , 2-channel simultaneous sampling, integrated driver for easier drive
      • Multiple devices can be synchronized via external sample clock
    • ADS9327: 16-bit resolution, 5 MSPS, 2-channel simultaneous sampling
      • an 18-bit version will also be released.

What other requirements does your system need?

    • Resolution?
    • Input signal amplitude, frequency, differential or single ended?
    • signal chain bandwidth?
    • What is the use case for this 24 channel data capture system?

    Best regards,

    Yolanda

  • Thank you Yolanda. ADS9218 looks like will serve our need. So I think the general idea is to read the LVDS into a memory buffer, and then have the MCU read it out. Can you recommend some memory buffer and MCU as well?

  • Hello Kan Yu,

We typically recommend an FPGA for the LVDS, because aside the differential signal, it is also a higher bit rate not always attainable for MCUs.

There are some methods to convert the LVDS into a different format that could help, like the memory you mentioned, or by deserializing the signals but they do take some additional steps. this document talks more about the LVDS signals

At the moment I do not have a solution for an LVDS to MCU.

What MCU is being used or will be used? Would using an FPGA be an option here?

The ADS9327 does sample at 5MSPS and it also has serial outputs that are MCU compatible

    Best regards,

    Yolanda
