DAC80004: Max Sample Rate / Update Rate

Part Number: DAC80004
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC80504,

Tool/software:

Hi,

According to datasheet the DAC80004 Update rate is limited to 200Ksps and the DAC80504 is up to 1Msps,

these two parts have the same architecture R-2R, and SPI Clock speed of 50Mhz and a similar settling time,

I'm trying to figure out what are the key parameters that makes the max update rate difference which is is very different while the above parameters are quite the same,

((is it small signal transition architecture that makes the difference or something like that?)

Thanks in advance,

Barak

  • Hi Barak,

The DAC80004 requires 32 clock cycles per update and the DAC80504 requires only 24. But really this shouldn't account for that much of a difference I think whoever did the update rate calculations for the product folders just did them in different ways. I'll pass on a note to our marketing team to make sure these details on the product folders are more consistent with each other.

If you want include the settling time in the calculation, then you can estimate just 1/settling time. The settling time for both devices is for a large step and also for a very small settling band (1LSB for DAC80004 and 2LSB for DAC80504).

    DAC80004: 172kSPS

    DAC80504: 200kSPS

If you want to know how fast the DAC can be updated, you can do SPI frequency/SPI clocks.

    DAC80004: 1.5MSPS (50MHz/32)

    DAC80504: 2MSPS (50MHz/24)
