ADC3683EVM: ADC3683EVM - SPI Communication

Part Number: ADC3683EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADC3683, ADC3664EVM

Dear Sir/Madam,

We are trying to establish SPI connection using the USB port on the DC134 REV E board. (which seems important because it appears there are various "ADC3683EVM" boards out there.

I've tried installing the ADC36xx-EVM-GUI version 1.2.0. when I plug in the device and then start the GUI. I get the warning:

An error occurred: 0

Traceback (most recent call last):

File "main.py", line 359, in run

KeyError: 0

In the bottom of the GUI window (that I cannot interact with) I do see "ADC35XX_1:FT8KQXNM". Which would suggest it did find the device.

If I start the GUI without the device plugged in, the GUI starts in SIMULATION mode, plugging in the device after doesn't seem to do anything.

I have also tried changing the FTDI driver and using PyFTDI to communicate with the device, but no matter what I do, the device returns FFFF to all queries.

P.S. the Schematics listed on the product page do not match the TI board. (the folder for 3683 contains 3664 files) I had to find the proper schematics somewhere on the e2e forums in a random post.

  • Hello,

Thank you for the detailed post.

The error you are recieving indicates that your PC was able to communicate with the USB bridge on the EVM (which is why you see "ADC35XX_1:FT8KQXNM") but it was unable to communicate with the ADC.

This is likely due to the absence of a sampling clock. The ADC needs a sampling clock for all SPI transactions. Please ensure you are providing a sampling clock before opening the GUI. You can follow the ADC3683EVM user's guide for the proper setup procedure. The user's guide shows the steps for the latest revision (RevG), however the same steps will work for the RevE board that you have.

Also, the schematics listed on TI.com are, in fact, correct. The naming of the files is a bit strange, because we designed one PCB layout (the ADC3664EVM) but swapped out the ADC to create EVMs for other device variants. If you look at the full file names in the ADC3683 folder, you will see: ADC3664EVM_RevG1(003 ADC3683)_Sch_.PDF

However, if you would like the ADC3683EVM_RevE schematics, you can find them here: 5518.ADC3x6xEVM_RevE_SCH.PDF

    Best,

    Luke Allen
