DP83TG721EVM-MC: No connection between Eval-Boards

Part Number: DP83TG721EVM-MC
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83TG720EVM-MC

Hello,

I would like to operate the evaluation board(s) as a media converter. By this I mean that 1000BASE‑T should be used as the input on one side and converted to 1000BASE‑T1 on the other side. Unfortunately, this does not work “out of the box” as expected.

Initially, I had the problem that the second board (I call it “_1” because all labels include this suffix; this is the board with the RJ45 connector) was not being powered until I discovered that resistors R57 and R58 were not populated. The _1 board does have 3V3 connections via connector J11_1 (on the other board J14), but these connections lead nowhere (I do not have the layout, but according to the schematic there is no connection to any other 3V3 nets, and it also does not functionally connect).

LED D2 lights up red when power is applied if R57 is populated. If R57 is populated later (soldered as a jumper), both boards boot up normally.

But back to the unresolved issue:

Everything is now powered and all LEDs are illuminated, except LD1–4 on the first board. These LEDs are supposed to indicate the working link between the first and second board. However, these LEDs only light up if jumpers J5 and J12 are swapped, and only until the connection resets.

Additional information:
LED D5_1 lights up orange from time to time. The 1000BASE‑T side is connected to a Raspberry Pi (iperf3 server), and the 1000BASE‑T1 side is connected to another evaluation board that also converts back to 1000BASE‑T and is then connected to a router. The other Eval-Board works fine, i tested it with another board.

thank for your help

  • Hi Dominik,

That is correct, R57 and R58 should be populated to power on the second board (DP83867). J12 controls Master/Slave mode selection and J5 controls managed/autonomous mode selection. Depending on the configuration of the EVMs link partner, these will determine whether or not a link can be established. Therefore, certain settings of these jumpers will result in the link indication LED not turning on. Is your link partner configured as master or slave?

    Best regards,

    Greg

  • Hi Greg,

Thank you for your response. The link partner is in slave mode. However, I tested all variants in combination with the ping command and take a look on the LEDs (see table).

    TI DP83TG7 Link Partner Reaction
Master (autonomous) Slave (auto neg.) LD3 on; LD2 on and blinking sometimes; no connection (ping)
Slave (autonomous) Master (auto neg.) LD3 on; LD2 on and blinking sometimes; no connection (ping)
Slave (managed) Master (managed) LD3 off; LD2 off; no connection (ping)
Master (managed) Slave (managed) LD3 off; LD2 off; no connection (ping)

OK, the autonomous operation mode has apparently brought some activity to the system. It now seems that data is being exchanged between the PHYs. Unfortunately, a connection between the server and the client is still not being established, as confirmed by a ping test. I also noticed that while the LED on the RJ45 connector is illuminated, it does not indicate any data transfer through short blinking pulses. I cannot measure the 1000BASE-T1 signals jet, at least to verify whether the SPE link is correct.
Can I assume that if the LD2 is on and occasionally flickers briefly (synchronized with an LED on the link partner), the 1000BASE-T1 connection is okay? How can I proceed to check if the 1000BASE-T connection is working correctly? The server or client works when I plug them directly into the router.
I look forward to your response.
    Best regards,
    Dominik
  • Hi Dominik,

Can you share a register dump from the PHY? The registers can indicate if the 1000BASE-T1 link is up. When the PHY is in managed mode, it will not be able to link up with its link partner.

    Best regards,

    Greg

  • Hi Dominik,

The Link Status register bit, 0x01[2], indicates that the link is up. If the DP83TG721 is strapped to managed mode, the PHY will only be able to link-up after writing 0x0001 to register 0x018C. What is the link partner for this PHY? In addition, are you using an initialization script of any kind? In the secure resources file for the device, there is an Open Alliance initialization script. If you use this to initialize the device, do you still see link issues?

    Best regards,

    Greg

  • Hi Greg,

thanks for your response. According to your answer, i see the register 0001 changes from 0x0141 to 0x0145 when link is established. So the 1000BASE-T1 Link seems ok, but the media-converter funktion still doesent work. I checked the register for sgmii status (register 060A). The SGMII link is down (bit 11 = 0). So the connection between 1000BASE-T1-PHY and the 1000BASE-T-PHY is broken and i am wondering why cause its a connection on the board. How can i debugg this connection?

I dont use a initialization script and cannot find any skript for this Board. I have several link partner from diffrent Manufacturer.

For a better overview: i am testing a connection from one PC to another routed over a switch. The link between the switch and PC2 i replaced with two 1000BASE-T1-media-converter and a 1000BASE-T1 line. Thats working fine bevore i replaced the first media-converter with this Eval-board. Recently, I received another evaluation board, the DP83TG720EVM-MC. I replaced the previously used TI board with this one. The result was a flawless connection. Nevertheless, I would still like to get the DP83TG721EVM-MC up and running and perform tests with it.

    Best regards,

    Dominik

  • Hi Dominik,

Thank you for the update. Could you please send a photo of the EVM so I can verify the jumper configuration? Currently the TX packet counter register, 0x639, is showing a value of 0 in your register dump. Oftentimes this points to a mismatch in MAC interface.

    Best regards,

    Greg

  • Hi Greg,

i am sorry, i cannot upload a picture cause there is a problem with the upload. When i drag and drop the picture to the text field, i get the error message: "We apologize, but an unexpected issue prevented the page you requested from being available. We've logged the issue so the site administrator can resolve the problem." Using Insert>Image/video/file open up a window where i can only enter a link. No file drop works and there is no file search or upload option.

So instead i write down all jumpers who are connected (all other connector are open):

  • Hi Dominik,

Thanks for the written description of the strapping. Does attaching the photo work if you put it in a .zip file and attach the zip? I will check over the listed configuration in the meantime.

    Best regards,

    Greg

  • Hi Dominik,

Is it possible to send this zip file with the photo? Sometimes the pin enumerations described in the EVM User's Guide create confusion with the board.

    Best regards,

    Greg
