ADC3910D125: Bit Resolution

Part Number: ADC3910D125

Hi Team,

Posting on behalf of our customer.

I'll share this E2E post with our customer so he can reply when needed.

I am investigating the datasheet of ADC3910D125. At the beginning, it is written that the ADC has 10 bits resolution. However, in Table 6-3 (on page 40), there is also 12-bits option without Decimation. Moreover, on the chip, there are 12 data pins. What I understood is: this ADC can send the sampled data in 12-bits via parallel-output (via 12 pins). Is it correct?

If so, when I select 12-bits output option, is the analog data sampled at higher resolution (according to 10-bits)? Or, is the analog data still sampled at 10-bits resolution and then 10-bits data is converted to 12-bits digitally? Since I am planning to use this ADC in a very noise-sensitive application, the sampling resolution is very critical for me.

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

The ADC is only 10-bit. You can only benefit from the 12-bit if you use the decimation to reduce the data rate and BW to create better in-band SNR (since you are reducing the BW). What is the application and what kind of performance are you looking for?

    Thanks!

    Cheers,
    Fadi

  • Hi Fadi,

I am Alper, I asked the question. Thank you for your answer.

You said that "I can only benefit from 12-bit if I use the decimation". However, my confusion is about the bypass option (for decimation) in 12-bits resolution given in Table 6-3 of the datasheet. Please could you check Table 6-3 on page 40 of ADC3910 datasheet? You will see bypass option is available for 8bits, 10 bits and also for 12 bits. Could you please explain what is this option for? What happens if I use bypass (no decimation) for 12 bits resolution? Actually, my first question was regarding this specific option.

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    Alper
