ADS1232REF: Firmware V1.20 failed

Part Number: ADS1232REF
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F449

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

we bought the EV-board ADS1232REF from you. The board has firmware V1.20 installed. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work. When calibrating the board in “SCALE” mode, significant errors occur, making calibration in the “kg” range impossible. The error shows up, for example, when activating the tens digit, but the ones digit changes instead. A negative weight is entered as the reference weight. This entry cannot be reversed. We accept that this is old, no longer maintained software. We would like to have the source code for firmware V1.20. We have been working with the MSP430F449 for 20 years and can fix the error ourselves. Thank you very much for your support.

  • Hello Steffen,

This is a known firmware defect, it is recoverable without source code.

    1. The bug you are seeing is documented

The calibration-weight entry routine validates the range after writing to storage, so an out-of-range value (including a negative float) gets committed to flash and survives reset. The intended entry range is 0 to 99.9 1.

    2. Recovery procedure (no reflash needed)

To clear the stuck negative calibration weight:

    1. Enter the calibration configuration screen until the minus sign flashes.
    2. Press SW4 repeatedly — this increments the hidden floating-point value.
    3. Continue until the value crosses zero and becomes positive.

The number of presses required depends on the magnitude of the stored value, so it may take many presses 1.

    3. Source code request

TI cannot release the ADS1232REF firmware source. The build tools are obsolete, and licensing terms changed. An unofficial third-party copy circulates but is not supported by TI 2.

    4. Recommended path: bypass the scale firmware entirely

Rather than fighting the onboard SCALE mode, stream raw ADC data over the virtual COM port and do weight scaling in your own software:

    • Send s followed by CRLF over the virtual COM port.
    • The board returns a 3-byte hexadecimal two's-complement ADC code, which you convert and scale externally 3.

This removes the buggy digit-entry and calibration-storage logic from your measurement chain completely.

    1. ADS1232REF: Calibration weight is stuck negative
    2. ADS1232REF: The FTP links to the firmware seem to be down
    3. ADS1232REF: Change displayed unit to Newton
    4. ADS1232REF User Guide (SBAU120B)

I'm checking to see if there is any other firmware examples that we can provide, but I think you should be able to get the software working correctly again by following step 2 above.

  • Hello Keith,
thanks for the tips. I managed to set a positive calibration weight again. On my board, you switch the position with SW4 (SW5 in the other direction) and change the value with SW2 (decrement) and SW3 (increment). I decremented the tens digit until the minus sign jumped to a positive number. I also put together a PC program using the console, so now I have a scale. Thanks a lot
