Ratiometric design ADS1282

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1282, ADS1259, ADS1232, ADS1248

Hello everybody,

I am making a new design for a high precision sensor. As converter I have chosen the ADS1282 chip. While reading the data sheet I could not find out for sure if the device is ratiometric with the reference voltage.

What exactly is the influence of the ref voltage to the device? The data sheet recommends to use a 5V ref but also proposes a 4.5V variant (p. 41). What are the drawbacks when using the 4.5V?

I'm looking forward to your answers. Thank you.

Greetings Reto

  • Hello Reto,

The programmable internal digital filter of the ADS1282  is optimized to measure low frequency AC signals from less than 1 Hz to a few kHz;  the bandwidth  typically required for Seismic and Energy Exploration applications...  The device is designed to offer very low distortion and high resolution when measuring these AC signals.

The ADS1282 device will be ratiometric with the reference voltage.  There should not be much difference in performance between using a 4.5V reference and a 5V reference.  Figure 14 and Figure 15 on page 9 of the datasheet show the SNR and THD performance of the device versus the reference voltage.

What type of sensor are you trying to measure?  If you are trying to measure a DC or very slow moving signal, such a load cell, pressure or RTD sensor, a device like the ADS1259, ADS1248 or ADS1232 offer digital filters with frequency response and data rates optimized for these measurements.

    Thank you and Best Regards,

    Luis

  • Hello Luis,

Thank you for your answer. It was very help full.
I want to measure a acceleration sensor with a bandwidth of around 100 Hz.

    Best Regards
