TSW1400 Download Failure

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS4149

Hello:

I have a TSW1400EVM that I am using to evaluate the ADS6148EVM.  When I attempt to download firmware I receive the following warning.

Text reads: "Download Firmware JTAG_CHAIN_BROKEN_ERROR The JTAG chain was broken while loading firmware".

How do I fix this? Thanks!

  • Karl,

We are seeing this problem from a few customers and it appears to be related to the pc. Can you send me the type of pc and the operating system you are using. Have you tried a different pc? We are currently trying to resolve this issue and any information you can provide will help us.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • It is a Dell tower T3400, the OS is Windows XP Professional SP3. I can try a different computer, I have a T3500 with Windows 7 as well and can try it.

    Thanks,

    Karl

  • Windows 7 also did not work.

  • Hi,

We are looking into this, but there are a couple of easy things to ask first, just in case it is one of these things.

Is the power to the TSW1400 on?  There is a slide switch next to the 6V power input jack.  The first time I installed the TSW1400 I did not think to look at the power switch because the USB port is powered off the USB cable and so the board looks to be 'live' to the GUI even if the FPGA is off.  But the cooling fan on the FPGA was not running, which was my only visual cue that the power was off.  And having the power off to the FPGA gives the same firmware download error.

Is the USB port being used a USB 2.0 port?  I don't think we support USB 3.0 ports yet, and I'm not sure about USB 1.0 ports.

    Regards,

    Richard P.

  • Karl,

If you are still having troubles with this board, please provide me with your shipping address and we will send you a new board.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • I am having the same problem Karl reported but I am trying to connect to a ADS4149 board.  Do you have any suggestions?

    Cheers,

    Kyle

  • Kyle,

Can you provide more info on what your problem is?

    1. Does your TSW1400 work with other evm's?

    2. Can you connect to the board with the GUI?

    3. What version of GUI are you using?

    4. What OS are you using?

    5. Is the 5V led on after turning on the main power switch?

    6. If you get to the point where you start loading firmware and it fails, what error message does the GUI report?

7.Have you tried a different computer? If so, did it have a different OS?

    Regards,

    Jim

    1. Does your TSW1400 work with other evm's?

This is the first and only evm we have tried.

    2. Can you connect to the board with the GUI?

The board is recognized by the GUI, the problem comes when I try to select the ADS from the dropdown, I always get a broken jtag error

    3. What version of GUI are you using?

    The GUI is version 1.5

    4. What OS are you using?

    64 bit Windows 7

    5. Is the 5V led on after turning on the main power switch?

    Yes

    6. If you get to the point where you start loading firmware and it fails, what error message does the GUI report?

I'm getting the same 'Download Firmware JTAG_CHAIN_BROKEN_ERROR The JTAG chain was broken while loading firmware' Karl was.

7.Have you tried a different computer? If so, did it have a different OS?

I have not tried with a different computer.

  • Kyle,

If you want to attempt to trouble shoot the board, on the top side of the board near one of the corners of the FPGA are 8 resistors that could possibly cause this problem. Make sure R61, R62, R63, R64, R149, R150, R151, and R152 are all installed and read 0 Ohms across each one. If you want to send the board back for a replacement, please send your board to the following address:

    Jim Seton

    Texas Instruments

    12500 TI BLVD

    Dallas, TX 75243

    M/S 8755

    FedEx account #106695628

  • They all check out at ~.2 Ohms.

  • Kyle,

Send the board back and we will get another one to you ASAP.

    Jim

  • Hi Jim,

I am the purchasing representative for UW Madison who purchased this eval board.  Is the FedEx account number the RMA number so that we can return this board for replacement? If not, could you please provide an RMA number for shipment and replacement of this part?

  • Debbie,

This number should allow Fed Ex to bill TI for the shipment. I do not know what a RMA number is.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Hi Jim,

Kyle Jero who has the part for return tried to call FedEx using your account number and they indicated that without a printed label they are unable to help us return this part.

I believe that you will have to contact FedEx and explain the situation as it is your account number.  Then I think they issue you an RMA (return merchandise authorization) number and send (probably email) a label which you can forward to us to return the part.

Please let me know what you are able to find out from them.  We are unable to return this part without a label currently.

    Thank you,

    Debbie Sewell

  • Debbie,

You can call TI product support center at 512-434-1560 to get an RMA number for return merchandise. Let me know if this helps.

  • Hi,
I'm having this issue also. My case is a little different since my board was working last week. and had been working for 8 months before that. It did have issues when i first used the board but It has been working well until today. I have another TSW1400 board that works with my computer and current set up. I even switched the power supplies, cables and RAM chip on the board. All have failed and I still get the same error. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Brian
