LM96550 (or 96551) pulsar

The spec for LM96550 ultrasound pulsar lists a max current of 2A for an entire chip at 2% duty cycle. Say, the IC is driven at +/-50V and drives an ultrasound transducer, which is 50Ohm real resistance. The RMS of the output waveform is about 35V. Then the instantaneous current is 35/50=0.7A per channel. Is it possible to excite all 8 channels synchronously at these driving voltages and not damage the IC? Do I need to significantly lower down the voltages? How does the max current restriction changes with lower duty cycles?

Thanks.

Eugene

  • Evgeniy,

The instantaneous current for each channel clamps at 2A.  This means that you can run 8 channels at 50V simultaneously.  The specs in the data sheet do expect a 2kohm load however. So 50/50 is 1A peak per channel or 35/50 is 0.7Arms per channel instantaneous.  With lower duty cycles,  there is more instantaneous current allowed but the device will saturate at 2A anyway.

    Thanks,
