I am designing a control system for high temperature (175C). A microcontroller that qualifies for this is SM470R1B1M-HT. Before I design and manufacture the system I’d like to write and test the software in the lab (no temperature constrains). The evaluation board for SM470R1B1M-HT cost more than $5000. TMS470R1B1M (not recommended for new design) could be a replacement for testing SM470R1B1M-HT software but I couldn’t find an evaluation board for it. Another option is TMDX470MF066HDK but I am not sure how close this uC is to SM470R1B1M-HT.

Question: What microcontroller is similar to SM470R1B1M-HT (ARM7TDMI) that has an evaluation board (<$200) and the software is easy portable to SM470R1B1M-HT?

There is a version of the SM470R1B1M, that is not part of the HEAT EVM that you reference.

It is made by IAR. Unfortunately there is not any stock at this moment and more are being worked. This may take some time to get completed.

I will send you and the marketing team an email, and we may be able to send you one that we have internally in the mean time.

Wade, thanks for your fast answer.

I considered using the IAR evaluation board for TMS470R1B1M but I gave up not being in stock.

If I can buy/borrow this evaluation board and if it works with CCS5 (I have a license and XDS510) is the best option for me.

What is your opinion about TMDX470MF066HDK vs. SM470R1B1M-HT?

I don't believe them to be compatible, but possibly one of the experts could add a comment if they know for sure.

The R1B1M board from IAR does not have JTAG connector for TI 14 pin, but has the 20pin ARM.

When I hear back on possible availability of loaner board, I will email you.

Hello Marius and Wade,

These two devices will have some similarities but are very far apart in terms of compatibility. They will use different instruction sets and most if not all of the peripherals will be similar but have different programmer's models. I would not recommend using the TMS470MF06607 as a development vehicle for the R1B1M device.

Another option for me is to use SM320F2812-HT. It has enough computational power for my application. The problem is that it’s too big, 172 pins!!!.

What is your opinion about this?

Unfortunately, I can't speak to the SM320F2812-HT device as I am not familiar with it. Do you have a TI rep/FAE that you work with for your parts? If so they may have a contact within the high reliability group that might be better suited to help you. If not, let me know and I will see if I can find a contact that you can discuss your questions with.

Marius, I am in the High Reliability group.

What specifically is your question on the F2812?

With respect to other TMS470 devices that may be similar to the R1B1M. There are not any EVMs still produced for these devices with the exception of the SM470R1B1M.

I want to design a control system for a down-hole device. The temperature requirement is 175C with at least one year life (not continuous function). I need to implement a PSK algorithm (a FFT or other DSP function are welcomed) that requires some computational power. The TI uC-ers fitted for these requirements are SM470R1B1M-HT and SM320F2812-HT. I like more SM320F2812-HT but it’s too big (172 pins). The only remaining option is SM470R1B1M-HT with an evaluation board costing >$5000. A partial solution is to use an IAR evaluation board for TMS470R1B1M that is out of stock in US but I found a provider in UK.

What is your opinion/recommendation?

I have also been looking at the HiRel solutions.

Were any solutions found for prototyping the SM470R1B1M-HT?

Also what tool chains are available for programming the SM470R1B1M-HT?
