ADS1271 Data format

Hi,

We are attempting to use the ADS1271 connected to a Pic to measure the force applied to the loadcell.  We are using the SPI format with High precision but we keep getting rubbish data plus a very slow conversion rate.  Is the data format simply 3 Data bytes (-MSB, Mid LSB) or 3 bytes plus a fourth byte CHR$13 ?

We have tried reading with four bytes and the system seems to work a lot better, but nowhere in the data sheet does it mention the fourth byte.
