Can I use TSW1405EVM with the ADC5400?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS5400

I don't see ADC5400 in the TSW1405EVM list of related parts.  Is that just because the memory sample size is small for this high-speed of a device, or will it not work because of the data interface?

TIA.

  • Hi,

I presume you mean ADS5400, since I don't know of an ADC5400.  ADS5400 *is* supported by the TSW1405.    What version of the High Speed Data Converter Pro GUI are you using?  I have versions 2.00 and 2.05 installed on our lab PCs here and they have a device selection for ADS5400 when used with the TSW1405.

The list of devices available for you to choose from at run time is dependent on the list of ini files that are installed at the time the GUI is installed or ini files that are copied in later.  Where the HSDC Pro Gui is installed there is a folder called TSW1405 Details with a folder there called ADC Files.  There should be an ini file in there called ADS5400.ini.  All the ini files you see here represent ADC EVMs that are supported by TSW1405.  In the TSW1400 details folder there may be a different list of ini files that represent different EVMs supported by the TSW1400.  You have to actually have the TSW1405 or TSW1400 connected to the PC for the GUI to see at run time what capture card you are using and then the GUI can know what list of ini files to get.  You may not be able to select any device at all if you just run the GUI without connecting to the TSW1405 or TSW1400.

Memory limitations in the TSW1405 would not be a reason to support or not support the ADS5400.  The TSW1405 has 1Mbit of memory which is enough to capture 65536 samples of up to 16bit resolution.  What may have been a limitation with the ADS5400/TSW1405 combination is the speed of the LVDS sample bus, so the TSW1405 uses the ADS5400 EVM in dual-bus mode which reduces the data rate of the LVDS into the FPGA by using twice as many pins.  The TSW1400 will allow the use of the ADS5400 in either single bus mode or dual bus mode, and the TSW1400 has a much deeper capture memory.    But TSW1405 is certainly a very viable option with this EVM for up to 65536 sample capture at up to1000Msps sample rate.

  • Yes I meant the ADS5400.

And I was looking at the TSW1405 list of compatible devices, which omits the ADS5400, although I'm not sure why.  I do not have the software or boards at this time.

  • Hi,

Oh, I see.  Thanks.  You are looking at http://www.ti.com/tool/tsw1405evm, right?  Yes, I see that ADS5400 is not listed there, but it should be.  And there are a number of other devices that should be listed there as well that are not, so we need to fix that.  Thanks.
