Reading Data from daisy chained ads1298

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1294, ADS1298

I have question concerning reading data of multiple ADS1298 in daisy chain mode. In the ADS1298 tech sheet (p38), there is an example of an ADS1298 and ADS194 in daisy chain configuration. It states "Data from the ADS1298 appear first on DOUT, followed by a don’t care bit, and finally by the status and data words from the ADS1294." Does this imply that only the last item in the chain get the status data read?  I would of thought that both devices would have their status read.
Thanks,

  • Hi John,

You should have received an email from Tony Calabria on Monday regarding this question. Here was his reply below, I'll have him follow up with you later and give you a call:

Are you talking about reading back the STATUS byte (actually 3 bytes) from the chained devices?

You should be able to do this without a problem. All of the ADCs in the chain are designed to shift out all data for the channels, this includes the STATUS byte for all the chained devices. Figure 46, in the data sheet (on p38), showing the daisy chain timing shows the MSB from the chained devices to be shifted through. This MSB is the MSB from the STATUS byte since that is the first bit transferred during a data retrieval.

    Hope this helps!

    Best Regards,
