ADS7828 Power Consumption Questions

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS7828

I am trying to do some basic digital to analog conversion using ADS7828. Is there a way to determine the maximum power consumption from the info given on the data sheet ?

Thanks in advance.

Sri

  • Sri,

On page 3 of the data sheet there is a table displaying the power dissipation for the three different modes (lower half of the page). The max, worst case scenario, you could see would occur when in high speed mode (1mW power dissipation). Under what mode and conditions do you plan to run the ADS7828 under?

  • Tony,

I am planing to run it either in the high speed mode or in the fast mode with a 5 V supply. On page 4 the max value for HS mode is around 5 mW. Can you please tell me if this is with the internal supply (reference voltage) on/off ? I would assume that the power consumption would be lower when the internal supply is not being used  -- is it right ? Also, whats the distinction between power consumption and power dissipation specification?

    Thanks again

    Regards,

    Sri

  • Power dissipation is the amount of power that the part will consume.

The specifications on page 4 of the data sheet are all done using an external reference. The conditions listed at the top of the page are the test conditions unless otherwise noted on the specific specification in the table. Using a 5V supply, the part will dissipate typical 3.75 mW in high speed mode and 1.5 mW in Fast mode using an external reference.

When the internal reference voltage is activated, it will draw about 1.3 mA of additional quiescent current. Therefore, using a 5V reference you will be dissipating an additional 6.5 mW  of power.

  • Hello again:

Is there a way to determine the settling time of the multiplexer ?

    Srinidhi

  • Sri,

The settling time of the input mux should be less than 1.2 us.
