Missing *.ini File for ADS5400 use with TSW1200

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS5400, ADS5400EVM, ADS5463

Hello community,

I'm using the TSW1200 Board for read-out of the new ADC ADS5400 Evaluation Board. If I want to choose the ADS5400 EVM from a drop-down Menue in the TSW1200 Software, I don't find it. The datasheet of the TSW1200 says on page 16, that new ini-Files will be made available as soon as new devices appear.

I don't  find this ini File for the ADS5400EVM anywhere on the CD (neihter the TSW1200 CD nor the ADS5400 CD).

Has anyone had this problem? How can Texas sell Evaluation boards, without the needed support-files?

Regards,

Michael Krist

  • Hi

Please see the attached file.  The ADS5400.ini file should be copied into the ADC Files folder where the TSW1200 software was installed, usually Program Files/TSW1200 or Program Files/Texas Instruments/TSW1200.  The next time the TSW1200 software is run it will find the new ini file and add the ADS5400 to its list of device families to choose from.

The next release of the TSW1200 software will include the ADS5400 ini file.  The version of TSW1200 software currently shipping is version 1.2 which was released before the ADS5400 was available, and we have been working on a major upgrade to the software which we expect to release soon.  (Please note that the TSW1200 needs to have version 1.2 software and version 1.3 firmware in order to support the ADS5400.  This is what has been shipping since around March 2009.)

  • Thank you very much. I will try this within the next hours.

  • Hello Richard P.,

in your post you said that  Version 1.2 software and Version 1.3 Firmware is being shipped since March 09. I bought the two boards (ADS5400EVM and TSW1200) in the End of Dezember 09.

When I start the Software with JP10 set LO and JP11 set to HI   (CFG1 in TSW1200 Firmware)  The TSW1200 Software says:

    "Software V. 1.1

    Firmware V. 1.3"

What now happens when I initialize the ADS500.ini file in the TSW1200 Software is, that it says

"TSW1200 Firmware Versio does not support this ADC.

Please contact the factory to update the Firmware.

    Firmware Version = 1.3"

I think that the Software Version 1.1 is an older one, and that the Board does not Support the ADS5400 with Software Version 1.1 (like you said in your Post, I need Software V. 1.2).

What am I going to do now? I need to evaluate the ADS5400 within this month. How / where can I find / download Software Version 1.2 for the TSW??

    Thank you very much,

    Michael K.

  • Hi,

I believe you do have firmware version 1.3 as expected and as reported. Also, I expect you do have software version 1.2. If you look in the banner bar of the window I expect you will see the name of the program include the text 1p2 while the status pane reports SW version 1.1 after initialization. The status pane reporting was not updated to say 1.2. That was an oversight when version 1.2 was released.

Are you in Europe? The software is reading 1.3 from the FPGA on the TSW1200 and comparing to see that is 1.2 or newer. (Support for ADS5400 was added in firmware 1.2.)  However, we have had two reports of the version comparison failing to work. I think this is due to local variance in usage of period '.' or comma ',' to delineate a decimal point. But we have been unable to duplicate the failure here in Dallas and setting the failing PC to use 'american' conventions did not clear the failure.

I now have a version 2.1 of the software here in which I streamlined the version checking calculations to remove the decimal completely, but I do not know for sure that this clears the issue since I cannot duplicate the issue here.

Today I will check the new executable with the version 1.2 installation. I think I can mail you an exe file to drop in to the TSW1200 folder that you can run and see if the new version fixes your issue.  That will also help me know that this new revision would fix the version comparison bug.  The exe file is about 6 or 7MB.  If your mailer can accept files that large then i'll need your email address, else we will need to set up an FTP drop and for that i'll need the IP address that your machine will use for accessing the FTP site.

  • I can't find the ADS5400 option in the TI ADC SPI (TSW1200) control software either.  I also tried copying the ads5400.ini file into the directory where the software is installed.  Unfortunately, that did not help.

  • Hi,

The ADS5400.ini file is not for the TI ADC SPI software, just for the TSW1200 software.  The TI ADC SPI Interface is a separate GUI with its own installtion CD that should have shipped with the ADS5400 EVM. The version of the TI ADC SPI Interface that ships with the ADS5400 is currently version 5.0, and it does not have a 'tab' on the top of the window for ADS5400 like it does for other device families.  As described in the User Guide for the ADS5400 EVM, the TI ADC SPI Interface supports the ADS5400 as a pre-release EVM through the 'Register Interface' tab and then SPI writes may be performed by entering address and data.  From the ADS5400 EVM User's Guide:

However, we will be moving away from having a single SPI GUI supporting many EVMs in favor of a dedicated SPI GUI for each device family, and so we won't be upgrading the TI ADC SPI Intercace to add a device tab - we will instead provide a dedicated ADS5400 SPI GUI.  But for now the TI ADC SPI Interface (version 4.1 or 5.0) can be used to control the SPI interface to the ADS5400.

If you are looking to control the ADS5400 SPI *using* the TSW1200 instead of the TI ADC SPI Interface GUI, as mentioned in the ADS5400 EVM User's Guide, you will be able to do that when we get the version 2.1 version of the TSW1200 software to you.  The option to control the EVM SPI by way of the TSW1200 was added for TSW1200 version 2.0 and newer.

  • Dear Richard,

it would be very nice if you could send me the .exe file via eMail.

Maybe you could describe in a few sentences, how / where I should install this exe file.

    Thank you very very much,

    Michael K.

  • Richard,

When I run the TSW1200 software, I fail to establish communication with the board. Here are the steps I took to install and run the board:

    1.  Intall software from the CD found in the box.

    2.  Provided 5 volts and 6 volts of power.

    3.  Turned on the card and installed the drivers.

    4.  Run the software(TSW1200 1p2.exe)

    5.  Software fails to establish communication between the board and computer.

Please advice on what I need to do to communicate with the board.

  • Hi,

Is your posting related to the posts above it that you replied to?  Or should your post be in a new thread?  It seemed like the TSW1200 was running in the earlier posts.

First, do you have the User's Guide for the TSW1200?  It is literature number SLAU212A and linked with the TSW1200 on our web site.

    http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/litabsmultiplefilelist.tsp?literatureNumber=slau212a

What do you mean by providing 5V and 6V of power?  The TSW1200 runs off a single 6V supply, which by default is supplied to J7.  By default, the red banana jack is a 5V output from the TSW1200.

When you connect the USB cable to the TSW1200 (with the TSW1200 powered on) please open the hardware device manager on the PC and compare it to Figure 8 in the User's Guide.  Do you see the TSW1200 appear as a com port under PORTS as well as an entry called multi-port serial adapters?  During the installation from the CD did you see popup windows as in Figure 7 of the User's Guide?  When you first connected the USB cable did the Found New Hardware wizard show you windows as in Figure 9?

May i see a screen shot of what the User Interface error looks like?

Finally, what operating system are you using on the PC?  Is it Windows XP, Vista, 7, or other?

    Regards,

    Richard P.

  • Richard,

I was feeding two seperate voltages (through power supply J15 and from the wall).   Now, I don't see an error in the middle of the screen.

Since, the communiation link (Samtec 120 pin fast speed connector) between ADS5400 and TSW1200 evaluation boards is not provided with the kit, can you provide a part number so I can order the correct part.

    Thanks

    Prab

  • Hi,

So now you are able to get communication over the USB cable to the TSW1200 on a com port?  Does the User Interface report that the TSW1200 was found on a com port in the lower left corner status pane after it finishes initialization?

If you have the ADS5400 EVM then it plugs into the TSW1200 directly.  There is not a cable for conencting the Samtec connector from the TSW1200 to the ADS5400 EVM.  Please see the atached picture showing the ADS5463 EVM plugged into the TSW1200.  In fact, the stand-off legs of the two boards are adjusted in height so that the two boards can sit on a table or bench and stay plugged in.

    Regards,

    Richard P.
