ADS1230 VS ADS1231

we are designing a new industrail system that would read loadcell; 0-20mA ; and resistive POT (5k ohm ) ;

we noticed that ads1230 gives better free noise bit compared with ads1231 ; while ads1231 is 24 bits and ads1230 is 20 bits . So Am I correct?

Secondily the common range input is AGN+1.5v  to AVDD-1.5 ; so how can configure ads1230/1231 to read 0-20ma? or to read the voltage from the POT ?

  • Hi Hector,

    Yes the noise-free bits differ by 0.1 of a bit.  However, the RMS noise is better for the ADS1231.  We know that both devices were tested for the number of noise-free based on direcf measurement, but we don't know how many samples were taken for the ADS1230.  The ADS1231 used 1024 samples at 10sps.  This would take about 102.4 seconds to complete and we don't know if there was a specific relationship to a drift source.  I would suspect that both devices are pretty comparable with respect to noise.

    Remember that the ADS1231 is fixed at a gain of 128 and has a low-side switch for conserving power through a bridge.  The ADS1230 has gains of 64 and 128, but does not have the low-side switch.  Neither device can be used to measure a signal referred to AGND as this will be outside the common mode input range.

    You could look at the ADS1232, which has gains of 1, 2, 64 and 128.  At the gains of 64 and 128 you will have the same common mode restriction.  However at the gains of 1 and 2 you can measure a signal referred to ground.  You may also want to consider the ADS1220 which has many gain options and a PGA bypass mode for single-ended measurements and gains of 1, 2 or 4.
