External clock for ADS1232 ?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1232

Dear Sir,

One of my customer use this part for a portable tester, however, the customer has difficulities when use external crystal as oscilliator. I am wondering the external crystal does work because no 4.912MHz is captured under osciscope probe. i upload the applicaiton circuit here, i checked the schematic and PCB design, it seems OK. Just wondering if any specical requriement to external crystal, or other possible reasons.

BTW, when XTAL1 is tied to GND, ADS1232 can work. the return data is vlaid according to input voltage.

Appreicate your comments for the possible rootcause.4188.ADS1232_external_Clock.pdf

  • Hi Hawk,

The ADS1232 is very sensitive to capacitive loading for the oscillator circuit.  As per datasheet in the section you quoted and you included in the PDF, there should be no capacitors and the crystal should be placed as close as possible to the ADS1232.  Board routing and trace length are also potential issues.
