How to validate pulse oximetry?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AFE4490

Hey, all!

Pretty please for your help here.

So, I have finally built my pulse oximetry using AFE4490.
My software runs well using the pulse oximetry from Texas Instrument (AFE4490SPO2 EVM product). It gives no oxygen saturation when I do not put any finger, and it gives the oxygen saturation when I put my finger.

I change the pulse oximetry from TI' pulsox into NJL5501r photodiode.
The oxygen saturation is shown perfectly.

But I need further validation of my device.
I want to know if my device can accurately measure people with extremely low oxygen saturation.
I tried this by asking my smoker volunteer who has consumed 10 cigarettes in a day, but even using standard pulse oximetry from an official company, the oxygen saturation is still normal.

I consult this to my friend who is doctor by profession, and he suggested me that people who has extremely low oxygen saturation is those who suffers pneumonia or ARDS. Or even a smoker, it should be a very hard one, which consumed cigarettes more than two packs a day.

I think finding a volunteer is kinda difficult method to validate my device,

So I am here to ask anyone, how do you normally validate your pulse oximetry whether it is working accurately or not?Does anyone use some kind of dummy test, or anyone test it to volunteer?or how?

I am sorry that my question might be less technical and not related anything to texas instruments product. I hope someone is still willing to help me to figure it out.

Thank you in advance.
