Connect TVP5151 to 16bit display

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TVP5151, TVP5150, TVP5150AM1

e2e,

We have a customer that insists on using the TPV5151 because they are working with 1.8V logic levels.  I have read the e2e pages the describe not to use the TVP5151 and its product page with all of the parts not recommended for new designs.  I apologize for asking this question, but wanted to confirm that the TCP5151 is not recommended for new designs.  If that is the case do we have any other solution that we can offer this customer? EAU is around 1K units.   Here is the customer’s question in case you will look into it.

Customer states he is using TVP5151 4x4mm package due constrains of space instead using NXP video encoder that is 16x16 mm in package. How to connect 16bit display to 8bit YCrCb(4:2:2) on TVP5151.

Thanks for your help!

  • Do you have more information on the 16 bit display you need to drive?

What color format (YUV/RGB)? What resolution? Is there a scaler on the display? Is it a raw LCD panel? Does the display support interlaced?

If you have a datasheet for the display this would help a lot.

    Steve

  • Thanks for your help Steve.  I'll get the data sheet and be back with you.

  • Hi Steve,

Here are more details from the customer.  No data sheet yet, but still requesting it.

Customer provided pin function table and it is attached in PDF to this post.

    8228.LCD Pinout.pdf

The LCD is a specialized LCOS display that can be driven with 8-bit serial 4:2:2 or 16-bit parallel 4:2:2 data; although, only with parallel 16-bit I keep the scaling with LCOS, so the dilemma is to use decoder with scaling and 8 bit serial or decoder with 16 bit parallel and I use the scaling from LCOS.  . I need to know if the 5150 really has scaling or not.

The customer also provided this link to a tool that shows the pin out of the LCD and the TVP5150.  Hopefully it will be helpful.

This is all of the details I have from the customer.  Going back to push for a complete data sheet.

  • the TVP5150AM1 does have a scaler but the customer would need to check that the output format is suitable for connection to the LCD since the output data is burst out with varying 'blanking' periods. The clock rate remains the same as for non-scaled.

With some fairly simple glue logic the 8 bit 422 could be converted to 16 bit Y/CbCr but obviously this would be added complexity and cost.

A datasheet is needed to help much more though.

    Steve

  • Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply and patience.  Still working on a data sheet.  If I can't get the data sheet then we will move on to another customer.  Thanks again for your help.  I'll let you know if the customer will provide the data sheet or not.

    Regards,

    John

  • Hi Steve,

I have a data sheet for the display, but it is confidential.  I'm going to send it to the Central Applications Team  and ask them to send it to you.  Please keep it confidential.  You had other specific questions that I have not answered yet, but can now.

Q:  What resolution is the custome using?

A:  I am feeding NTSC signal (720x525) that should be scaled in full display resolution (1280x720) if fractional scaling is a problem I can do 2x and crop the outside.

Q:  Is there a scaler on the display?

A: YES, only in parallel mode and NO, if I use their serial mode!.  Customer stil trying to decide if they should use the scaler in the TVP5150 or in the display.  They would like to get more details on the scaler in the TVP5150.  Where can I get them for the customer?

Q:  Is it a raw LCD panel?

    A:  NO, FLCOS

Q:  Does the display support interlaced?

    A:  Yes

Data sheet will be comig to you via CAT.

Thanks again for all of your help.

    Regards,
