ADS1256 Beta software

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADCPRO, ADS1274, ADS1256, ADS1255

Hi Greg

I have posted this as a new question as I did not get a reply. Yes I would be very interested in the beta software for the ADCpro and ADS1256EVM. At this time I am using the ADS1271EVM and MMB0 boards. In the past I have used the ADS1210 ADC driven by a AD620 instrumentation amplifier from a 350ohm bridge load cell and it worked very well. Now I want to up the performance of that arrangement. (Target spec is +-19 bits noise free at 1kHZ) My development system at this time is the ADS1271EVM and MMB0 board driven by a INA2128 instrumentation amplifier with low pass filters. The ADS1271sample speed at this time is 20KSPS in Hi Res mode and are post filtering the ADC data but the noise is still to high. I have now obtained an ASD1274EVM board so I can use it with the ADCpro software to check my current noise results. Before I stop development on the ADS1271 /ADS1274 arrangement, I would like to try other ADC's and compare results. Any suggestions to help me reach my target will be a great help.

Kind regards

John Ivory.

  • Mr Ivory -

The information that you requested was sent to the email address on file with your account at the beginning of last week.

Is it possible that it didn't make it through an email filter or rule?  Or is the address that is liked to this account different from where it should be sent or not correct?

If you still do not see it, please let us know the best way to get this to you and we will be happy to resend the material.

    Regards,

    Greg

  • Hi Greg

I have checked all my emails l received last week and it seems that I did not received the ADS1256EVM beta software. Is it a attachment to an email and what name was it given so I can look out for it. Yes please could you send it again? I am new to this sight and am finding it very helpful.

    Kind regards

    John.ivory.

  • Mr Ivory -

The file should be named "ads1256evm-pdk-plugin-0.9.0.0.zip".  I will re-send the email to you at the above address.  Let us know if you do not receive it with a couple hours.

    Greg

  • Hi Greg

I have just spoken to our IT people and they have confirmed that the ADS1256EVM software was blocked by our firewall. The problem is that the ".ZIP" file contains an ".exe" extension file. To over come this problem could you please rename all files with ".exe" extensions to ".txt "extensions and resend. I will change them back to ".exe" at this end. Sorry for this issue and thanks for a quick reply.

    Kind regards

    John Ivory.

  • Hi Greg

Yes I now have the ADS1256 Beta software "zip" file and have unpacked it ,renamed the file to ".exe" and run the installer. All went well. Next installed the ADS1256EVM board onto the MMB0 board and checked all settings/switches. Connected USB and Power. Now run ADCpro, and went to the EVM Plugin menu to install the ADS1256EVM board. The menu displayed the ADS1256EVM and I selected it, the windows wine glass came up for a short time but the left hand side of the ADCpro default display remained unchanged. (This section of the ADCpro display should have changed to the ADC1256 setting panel). I returned to the EVM Plugin menu and noticed the the "Unload EVM" was now being displayed in bold. I have now tried a number of times but with the same result. I returned to ADS1274EVM setup to check if the MMB0 board was still working. All worked as expected. Could look into why I am having this problem, or  suggest how I could move forward.

Kind regards (Thanks for resending the software quickly)

    John Ivory.

  • Mr Ivory -

You should be receiving a new file via email.  Please let us know if you do not receive this.

    Greg

  • Hi Greg

Thanks for the updated ADS1256 Beta software. I have unpacked, renamed, and installed the software. Powered up ADS1256EVM, MMB0 board and ADCpro. Selected ADS1256EVM on ADCpro menu and now left hand side of ADCpro displays ADS1256 settings. All Ok to this point. When attempting to change any ADS1256 settings I get a reported error message "error code 6004 lvsty.lvlib_styx_err.vi<err>  usb receive error/ads1256evm/config/gpio-out". This type of error is reported when any ADS1256 setting is changed. (I have just reported the error when trying to change the GPIO setting.) Tomorrow I will check the ADS1256EVM board switch/links, clock, supply voltages and data interface logic as I think that the ADS1256 is not responding. (I will get to you with my findings.)

    Thanks again. Kind regards

    John Ivory.

  • Mr ivory -

Please let us know the results of your testing.

    One question -

    Regarding your statement

    john ivory said:
    "error code 6004 lvsty.lvlib_styx_err.vi<err>  usb receive error/ads1256evm/config/gpio-out"
    - did you copy/paste this from the error or type this out?  The reason I ask is that "gpio-out" is an invalid file and should be "gpio_out", subtle difference, but this will cause the error.

Let us know which is the case.

    Greg

  • Hi Greg

Yes I typed out the first pert of the reported error message and you are quite right, it should read "gpio_out". Please see full error below.

    Kind regards

    John Ivory.

  • Mr Ivory -

Were you able to verify the setup?

For the ADS1256EVM plug-in, the configuration of the switches that we have verified is (ADS1256EVM text is towards you (at the bottom of the EVM):

J8 - jumper on GND (top position)

J6 - jumper on DVDD (left position)

J7 - jumper on DVDD (left position)

S4 - switched to XTAL (left position)

J4 - jumper on all positions (across) EXCEPT 1.8V

    Regards,

    Greg

  • Hi Greg

Thanks for the pointers but are we talking about the same EVM board. I can not find J8,J7 and J6. The board that I am using is outlined in your ADS1256EVM User's Guide SBAU090. That said I have been checking the signals around the ADC,my findings are as follows:- Board Switch/Links are S1,S2,S3 set to right hand position (AN0/1 ,AN2/3 connected to 2.5V Ref and using onboard reference.) AN5 to 8 not connected. SW4 set to left hand position. (DVDD set to 3.3V). SW5 set to left hand position (Onboard 7.68MHz), J4 link header has all links installed. (DGND to AGND,GND to DGND,GND to AGND DVDD to ADCDVDD, and AVDD to ADCAVDD) Following voltages measured on chip:- AVDD=+5v, AGND=0v, VRP=2.5V VRN=0v, AN0,AN1,AN2,AN3 all 2.5V, AN4 to 7 not connected. DVDD=3.3V, DGND=0V, XTAL IN/OUT sine wave at 7.68MHz.. DRDY=logic pulses at 30KHz, Next I looked at the control signals but to make them change I required to reset the MMB0 board then select the ADS1256EVM in the ADCpro menu to start a reboot. I did this each time for each signal. :- Reset=Logic high pulsed low for 79uS, 'Sync/'Pdwn=Logic high pulsed low 79uS, Sclk=logic low with large number of logic 1 pulses, Din=Logic low with number of logic 1 pulses, Dout=no pulses seen. As you can see that the voltages and signals look good. Just in case the ADS1256 is the problem I have orded a replacement one today. Hope the above makes sense.

    Kind regards

    John Ivory.

  • Hi Greg

I have the ADS1256EVM board now working. The problem was that I have an old version of the ADS1265EVM and that is why I could not find J6,7 and 8. I checked the difference between the two version and hard wired the signals on the old board. The control signal that stopped the board from working was the ADS1256 "CS". I hard wired this to GND and that cleared the fault. Thanks for all your help on this problem, you must have spent some time on it. One last question, I am having problems obtaining the ADS1256 part in the UK. Is this part still in production?. Should I consider a different part for a new design? (I need the part for at least 5 years.) I am also considering using the ADS1255 part instead of the ADS1256 because of the time delay required when using the "MUX". To overcome this issue I am thinking of using number of ADS1255 parts in this design.

    Thanks again Kind regards

    John Ivory.

  • Mr Ivory -

Glad to hear that things are working for you now.

The ADS1255/6 is still in production so there should be no concern using this part in designs.  I will forward this on to some of the marketing/sales folks to see what we can do for the near term to help you with parts.

    Regards,

    Greg

  • Hi Greg

I must have obtained the old ADS1256 some years ago when comparing it to a ADS1210EVM ADC. At that time I found the ADS1210 better suited for the design under development. The new design under development uses a ADS1274. This part works well but the base noise level is to high. So I have gone back to look at different ADC's and the ADS1255/6 looks like it will do the job. I have also ordered from TI an ADS1282EVM board to see how it compares to the ADS1256 but it is on back order. Last, can I take you up on your offer of an  uptodate ADS1256EVM board.

Looking forward to hear from your Marketing/Sales Folks.

    Kind regards

    John Ivory.
