ADS5294EVM and TSW1250EVM

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS5294EVM

Hi

Can two or more channels be connected to the ADS5294EVM at the same time?, if I want to evaluate two signals on the TSW1250EVM.

Thnaks

  • Hi,

The TSW1250 EVM is our older LVDS capture solution and only allows capture of a single channel at a time.  The TSW1400 capture card allows for simultaneous capture of all eight channels.  If you haven't already purchased a capture card I would recommend the TSW1400 as it is also compatible with all of TI's newer LVDS devices and soon to be released devices.

  • Hi

That means ADS5294EVM is compatible with TSW1400EVM board ? I am asking this because I have an ADS5294EVM and TSW1250EVM board, want to capture at least four channels. Since you have confirm that TSW150EVM   capture only a single channel. Furthermore I want to have 16 channels ADC by using two ADS5294IPFP. Can a single 80MHz crystal Oscillator be used for the two ADS5294IPFP?

    Regards,

    Moki

  • Yes, the ADS5294EVM is compatible with the TSW1400 EVM and is the only solution allowing for simultaneous capture on all ADC channels.

Yes, a single clock source driving both ADCs is recommended.  Ensure that the routing to each ADC is matched so that the sampling instant between the two devices coincides.  Also, if you plan to use the decimation features of the device, ensure that routing to the SYNC pin of both devices is matched so that you can synchronize all ADC output channels.

  • Hi Christian,

As I said in my last post, I want to have 32 channels with two ASD5294 ADC have some questions.

    1. Can the USB Interface and Serial control circuit on the ADS5294EVM be used for the two ASD5294?  Do I need to add extra components to the existing circuit? Or do I need another USB Interface and Serial control for the second ADC?
    2. Because of board size, I am thinking to place one ADC on the top layer and the other at the bottom layer. It is advisable to place the two ADC in this manner? Without affecting the functionality and thermal effect of the circuit.

  • Hi Moki,

Your previous post mentioned 16 channels with 2 ADCs.  If you need 32 channels you would need 4 ADCs.

Can the USB Interface and Serial control circuit on the ADS5294EVM be used for the two ASD5294?  Do I need to add extra components to the existing circuit? Or do I need another USB Interface and Serial control for the second ADC?

[CY] In the case you want to program the 2 ADCs differently, you would need a unique CSZ input to each but can share the CLK and SDATA lines between the two devices. Also, independent SDOUTs would allow you to readback the registers and confirm each ADC is programmed as desired.  Therefore, the same interface can be used with an additional 1 or 2 controls.

Because of board size, I am thinking to place one ADC on the top layer and the other at the bottom layer. It is advisable to place the two ADC in this manner? Without affecting the functionality and thermal effect of the circuit.

[CY] This is a question of risk versus reward.  I would say this is possible but as you suggest, care must be taken to remove heat. I would offset the devices as much as is allowable in the board space and provide an appropriate thermal ground for each device (i.e. do not put devices directly on top of one another.) If you absolutely must have the minimum form factor then there is risk and you might need to increase the number of boards layers to ensure proper thermal relief.  This will only be know through trial and error.

    Hi Christian,

Is 16 channel with 2 ADCs. Thanks for the advice on the routing of PCB. On the ADS5294EVM, the differential input have two transformer of type ADT4-1WT with Impedance ratio of 4:1. Why are there using ratio of 4:1 instead of 1:1 transformer?
