AFE44xx AFE_PDN and RST pins required?

Is it required to connect the AFE_PDN and RST pins to the MCU to achieve AFE44xx operation, or is a SW_RST and setting the PDN_AFE bit sufficient?

What are (dis)advantages of this approach?

These are not required pins to the MCU, but you may run into troubles when you are trying to debug. Here is another post that will give you more detail on the PDN options.
