regarding working principle behind ads1292r

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1292R

hi

iam working with ads1292r chip inorder to acquire respiratory waves using ECG electrodes. Iam having confusion RESPIRATORY IMPEDANCE PNEUMOGRAPHY method measures change in impedance during breathing ....if we place electrodes over chest then during breathing due to movement of chestwall by filling of air cause change in impedance because air is poor conductor....but in your respiratory circuit diagram given in ADS1292R datasheet you have placed electrodes over left and right arm...how it is possible to measure resistance change due to respiration from arm???

The circuit is in page:58 and figure 56 Typical Respiratory circuit in data sheet ...i have attached ads1292r datasheet below

  • Hello srividhyasakhi,

When the datasheet says to use the Right Arm and Left Arm electrodes to measure thoracic impedance, it is a bit misleading. Those are just the names of the electrodes we chose to use. The theory of how the ADS1292r measures respiration impedance can be found in detail here: www.ti.com/.../sbaa181.pdf

Essentially a known AC current is injected on to the body and the ADS1292r measures a change in voltage that occurs due to the change in impedance of the body from respiration. From what we have read, this measurement is typically made by placing the electrodes on the chest, but I am not really qualified to say where you could measure the signal and where you could not. It may be worth a study for you to try different electrode placements to determine what the optimal location is for a clean respiration measurement.
