ADS1258 OVF bit

All:

In the STATUS byte, STATUS.6 OVF talks about differential voltage checking.

If the part is being used as single-ended (no differential channels enabled), is OVF a "don't care?"

  • Todd,

The OVF (overflow) bit is still active even when the part is used as a "single-ended" input. The ADC still will make this bit high as soon as the input exceeds 1.0667 x VREF. In that case, the ADC is over-ranged and uses the OVF bit as an indicator.

I would like to point out that the single-ended only refers to using a single input of the mux as a common input to the other measurements to the mux. With a single +5V supply, if you tied the common input to +2.5V, you would still be able to measure negative voltages (as the AINN was +2.5V, and the AINP is set to a voltage lower than +2.5V).
