ADS1220EVM no USB driver found

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1220EVM, ADCPRO, ADS1220, ADS1120, ADS1120EVM

I'm trying to work with an ADS1220EVM and ADCPro.

I have both ADCPro and the ADS1220EVM plugin installed.

However, when I connect the EVM board, it doesn't find the correct driver.  I tried updating driver with device manager, with no luck.

It shows up as MSP420-USB Example in the device manager list.

I tried to uninstall ADCPro and plugin, re-install both. still no luck.

Any ideas how I can get this driver and get ADCPro working with this EVM?

Thanks

  • Hi Brian,

The ADS1220EVM uses a CDC (communications device class) standard driver that comes with the windows operating system.  Depending on any previous usage of the driver by another device, it may enumerate with something different than what you might expect.  Basically the enumeration should show that when you plug in the EVM a device is listed under the 'Ports' in device manager.

If you see an unknown USB device, it may be because the EVM was plugged in before the ADCPro plugin was installed and setup.

I believe you were trying to insert a screen capture to show me what you are seeing.  The way to do this is to save the image and then use the icon to insert the image in the post.

  • Thanks Bob..

yes, I tried to insert a screen capture.. will do it differently in future...

so, is there a way to correct the problem? I think I did connect the evm before software was installed...

    Thanks
  • Hi Brian,

Is the device enumerating at all? Or is it showing up as unknown?  If the EVM is enumerating as a virtual COM port device (doesn't matter the label) and is given a COM port, the plugin should find it.  You may have to manually select it from a drop down box.  The plugin is looking for a returned prompt such as '>ADS1220' when it polls the various COM ports.

  • Hi Bob,

In device manager, it's listed under "Other devices" and lableled "MSP430-USB Example" with an exclamation point on it.

When I try to update driver, I get this warning.."Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it." It shows it as a "Virtual COM Port (CDC). then it says "The third-party INF does not contain digital signature information."

    I don't think it's enumerating. I don't think it's assigned a comport number.

I tried the manual selection, but gave me no options.
  • Hi Brian,

Based on your description it sounds like you are using Win8 or 8.1, is that correct?  If that is correct, then I will see if I can get you the correct inf file that is signed as our original design effort was for Win7 where this signing was not required.

    Best regards,

    Bob B

  • Hi Brian,

The following zip file can be extracted which should have the correct signing.  If you write click on the extracted inf file you should see an install selection.  You should also be able to update the driver through device manager pointing at the correct inf file.

    Bob B

(edited... original zip file was missing the cat file with the signature) 2474.msp430_ti_signed.zip

  • Hi Bob,

    Yes, I have Windows 8.1.

I downloaded the zip file, unzipped it and put the inf file in the ADC directory. Attempted to update the driver, but I get similar error. If finds the new driver, but still says..

"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it."
It shows it as a "TI MSP430 USB".
Then it still says "The third-party INF does not contain digital signature information."

    Thanks

    Brian
  • Hi Brian,

My bad...I forgot to add the cat file to the zip.  I since re-edited the zip to contain the correct cat file with the signature.

  • Hi Bob,

I also tried to put the .inf file in the Windows INF directory.. not I get this error

"Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it."
It shows it as a "TI MSP430 USB".
I says "The system cannot find the file specified." but I'm sure the file is in that directory...

    Thanks

    Brian
  • Hi Bob,

Well, that worked better, now it enumerates.

Now it shows up in Device Manager under Ports, as expected at "TI MSP420 USB (COM5)"

However, I can't seem to access it with ADCPro.

I open ADCPro, open the EVM menu, and select ADS1220EVM from the list, and it ends up sending to Manual Port Connection.

In the Manual COM Port Selection, I select COM5 from the drop down, but it doesn't connect. When I press Accept/Exit, it remains on the manual com port selection window and the selection list again says <select COM Port to use>

This is how my whole day's been going...

Thanks for the help so far... any more ideas for me?

    Best regards

    Brian
  • Hi Brian,

I feel your pain as I have had those days too.  Unfortunately we don't know if this will even work in Win8.1. I'm thinking that it will based on a similar project we did.  The good news is the GUI is recognizing that there is a COM5.  What we don't know is if the EVM is responding.  What the GUI is asking for is a specific prompt. The prompt differs depending on if it is an ADS1120 or ADS1220.

    1. Double check the device and make sure that the ADS1220 is actually installed on the EVM.
    2. Double check and make sure that both LEDs are lit.
    3. Try unplugging and plugging back in the EVM.
    4. If you have access to a console program like hyperterminal or teraterminal, see if you can communicate to the EVM outside of ADCPro.
    5. Try installing the driver (easiest to do from device manager with evm plugged in) then remove and reinstert the EVM.
    6. Try another USB port.

    Best regards,

    Bob B

  • Hi Bob,

It is actually a ADS1120 EVM.
    Both LED's are lit.
Tried unplugging and replugging several times.
I will try the other things.

is my problem that it's an ADS1120?

    Brian
  • Hi Brian,

If you installed/trying to load the ADS1220EVM plugin, that would be your problem.  You need the ADS1120EVM plugin.

  • Thanks, I will try that... I thought the interface was generic... manual wasn't specific.. .here's crossing my fingers!!!

    Thanks

    Brian
  • Aye... that works better.. connected right away...

Back to the manual to step through the instructions!

Thanks very much for the assistance Bob! I really do appreciate it!

    Brian
  • Thanks again Bob...

by the way, are there any ap notes or other documents to help set this up to measure an RTD?

    Thanks

    Brian
  • Hi Brian,

I'm glad you finally made some progress. I can see why you may have been confused about the plugin version.  I will see about making a change in the user guide to make that more clear.

Section 5.2.3 in the user guide discusses the use of connecting an RTD to the J2 connector.  Keep in mind that the GUI will only report back a voltage value (or the actual code returned).  You will need to convert the voltage to a resistance, and then to temperature.  The plugin does not make the conversion for you.

The ADS1120 datasheet has an applications section where the usage of an RTD is discussed starting at 9.2.2 on page 51.  Any of the designs shown in the datasheet can be accomplished on the EVM.  You will have to compare connections of the desired circuit to the schematic of the EVM to discern the proper path.  You may be required to add/remove components for some use cases.  There are also some TI designs that utilize an RTD measurement and some of that documentation may be helpful.

If you have any specific question you can always create a new post and ask.

    Best regards,

    Bob B
