DRV104 Over-Current Condition

I’m using several of the DRV104 solenoid driver ICs to control several solenoid valves in my system. 

 

The issue I’m having is I keep momentarily tripping the over-current fault when I turn on the valves.  Granted, this is most likely from the fact that I’ve hung an LC filter on the output to smooth the PWM switching (I was mandated to do this for EMI reasons).    The caps are probably causing the current to spike when the valve is turned on which is signaling the fault.  I’ve measured the current spike and it is about 2 amps.   I’ll probably try adjusting the filter values and maybe adding an NTC thermistor to limit the current when the valves are first turned on.  The spike is fairly short too so a resistor may work as well.

 

My question is, do you know what the DRV104 does when the current limit is reached?  Does it just signal the fault, or does it actually turn the output off or scale back the output, will the chip overheat, etc.?

    The output will be turned off when the over current limit is reached as shown in the “CURRENT LIMIT SHUTDOWN WAVEFORMS” (pag. 5 of the DRV104 datasheet). If the power dissipation of the PCB and ambient temperature are such that the IC heat up, then thermal shutdown will eventually kick in.
