Self-calibration for ADS1255

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1262, ADS1255

Hi,

I found the measurement accrucy is much better after I applied SELFCAL. Could you recommend how often that I should do a calibration?

Thanks.

  • Hi Di,

Performing calibration will remove the majority of the ADC's initial error. After calibration though, offset and gain errors will return due to offset and gain error drifts.

The frequency of how often you re-calibrate will be very dependent on your application requirements and which environments you expect to operate the system. Sometimes an internal temperature sensor is used to detect a change in temperature which then triggers calibration

Note: System offset and system gain calibration may be useful to help eliminate other system errors. Self-calibration only removes ADC errors.

  • There is a new TI Precision Design which provides an ADC error analysis (http://www.ti.com/tool/TIPD188). The design files also include the Excel calculations that show errors before calibration, after calibration, and with temperature compensation or limited temperature range. The calculations are done with the ADS1262, but it would be possible to modify the values for the ADS1255.
