ESD protection of ads1192

Currently, i am designing a hardware device with ads1192.should I use external ESD protection circuits on PCB for any pins on ads1192? The device I am making is for prototyping a system. so the SPI pins are exposed. so do i add ESD protection circuit for those pins.

Hey Xin,

You may want to add them at the inputs to prevent ESD events from damaging the device especially if they're going to come in contact with a person's skin or clothes. On the rest of the pins, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you are careful in your lab with ESD precautions (grounded work surfaces, wristbands, etc.) then you probably won't damage anything. The ADS1192 EVM does not have any ESD protection on the SPI pins.

which inputs are u referring to ? the ECG input pins??

Hey John,

Yes I was referring to analog inputs since those may come into human contact and are therefore susceptible to ESD damage.

Dont the chip have ESD protection inbuilt? The ECG pins definitely will have human contact .

Hey John,

The chip has basic ESD protection circuitry whose ratings are specified in the "Absolute Maximums" section of the datasheet, but this is not to say that the chip is not susceptible to damage if those maximums are exceeded. In addition, TI does not provide warranty for devices which are exposed to voltages and current in excess of what are listed in the Absolute Maximums section.
