AFE5803 connected to TSW1400

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AFE5803EVM, AFE5803

I can't get past page 9 of SLOU332B - AFE5803EVM Evaluation Module User's Guide

The error message I get from HSDC Pro (v4.10) is "Check if USER_LED2 is OFF" - it is ON and "Clock from ADC EVM is not received by TSW board"

How do I get the ADC EVM clock to the TSW board (TSW1400EVM)?

  • Hello Gary,

We have received your inquiry regarding the AFE5803EVM and have assigned your post to the device apps expert.
  • I can see the clock and frame-sync signals leaving the AFE5803EVM board.

I can not find a suitable probe point on the TSW1400 to see if they get through the connector (the reference designators appear to be in a random order)

However, it seems to be an issue with the TSW1400, not the AFE5803EVM.  Unfortunately none of the help screens work in Windows-10.

And the AFE5803 is not on the list for a "re-load firmware" - where do I get updates to that folder?

  • Gary, this is a typo and should be USER_LED3. USER_LED4 is always off, but USER_LED3 should be on when you get a clock to the TSW1400. The default clock configuration of the AFE should be ok, but you will have to initialize the AFE with the GUI.
  • The LED pattern is/was as you describe:  All except 4 ON, 4:off.

I did initialize the AFE with the GUI - according to the steps in the manual.  I also tried "single-ended clock" in the GUI because the instructions have the hardware configured that way.

It is slightly different today after a PC reboot - LED1 flickers when starting.

And the current error message is "Read DDR to file FT_DEVICE_NOT_OPENED_FOR_WRITE FTDI device can not be opened to write data" - interesting because the firmware download happened with no error reports.

The laptop I have for this demonstration is running Windows-10.  Could this be an issue?

    Still stuck; please help.

Another complete reboot, and it is back to the symptoms of yesterday - time out, not FTDI error - this time I notice that LED1 does not flicker, LED3 and LED4 are off.

Another comment:  The program "High Speed Data Converter Pro" versions 4.10 and 4.10.10 do not work in WindowsXP.  They hang trying to open the board.

  • I am NOT making progress on this.

I got it working.  Then I tried to build the provided FPGA code - it took a while to figure out just which path through Quartus worked, but I did get past that.

The provided FPGA code doesn't work.  Perhaps a Quartus revision issue (it does give many error messages) or it may be a revision issue.

I went back to the distribution RBF file - the timeouts came back.

I did a full power cycle and reset everything to a couple of days back - when it worked that one time.

Dead.  Timeouts when reading SDRAM.  LED3 turns off when I access the card, and nothing short of a power cycle will get it back on.

    Please help?

  • Gary,

I think it might be a Win 10 issue. I will ask about the Windows XP. I can't see any obvious issue based on your description. You should never need to recompile the firmware, though. I have used this EVM several times. I have received an AFE5803 EVM today and will test this with Win 7 in the morning. Then, I will try Win 10.

    Thanks,

    Chuck
  • I need to synchronize the ADC with the T/R switch from the transducer driver.

Is there a way to do that without rebuilding the FPGA?  Because currently there are about 300 warning messages and 100 or so error messages - and that's without changing any of the source files.

  • Gary, I tested av AFE5803 EVM + TSW1400 in the lab with the GUI from ti.com and HSDCPro from ti.com. I simply pressed the software reset button on the AFE GUI and used "AFE5803_14x" on the HSDCPro GUI. This worked fine on Win 7. I will now test on Win 10.
  • I had JP9 in the "OSC" position by the way.
  • Gary, I am not sure what you mean by synchronize. The TSW1400 has a software trigger and external trigger mode. This can be used to trigger the TSW1400, TX-T/R or other external bench equipment. In can be used as a master or slave. The AFE5803 EVM shouldn't require syncing unless you mean the ADC clock which can be fed externally at J15 from an external source.
  • I saw the TSW1400 software and external trigger modes.  When I called up the GUI to program the trigger the screen warned me that it wasn't currently implemented, so I didn't go any farther.  Is there a document that describes how to use this?  The help screens did not get installed with the software.

I still want to get the correct RTL for the TSW - enough that I can duplicate "ADC_FIRMWARE.rbf".

I do have J9 configured of Oscillator/on-board clock.

I preformed a number of trials yesterday.  Typically one LED (I'm guessing displaying sync status) goes off as soon as a capture is started.  By cycling the power on the EVM5803 many times, I was able to get that LED to come back on.  Once in that state, I could perform many captures.

Is there something else I need to be doing to get the TSW to see the EVM clock?  I did not find many options with the EVM GUI.
