ADS1147 [PT100 suitability]

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1147, ADS1247

Hello.

I am interested in ADS1147. I want to use 3 wires RTD measurement connection. My question is:

1.- The RTD I want to use is a PT100 that meets with IEC 751 - Class A standard.  Can I use this kind of RTD?

2.- Can I use any PT100 with this chip?

                                     Thank you in advance!

  • Perico,

For Class A RTD performance, I would think that you would want a bit more precision in the measurement. In that case I would use the ADS1247 (24-bit ADC) instead of the ADS1147 (16-bit ADC). However the ADS1147 can be used with a PT100. In fact, the current version of the datasheet describes how to use a 3-wire RTD (PT100) with the ADS1147. Using the ADS1147 may require more calibration. Without calibration, you'll see much more offset and gain error.

Just start reading on page 68 of the ADS1147 datasheet. It shows how such a system can be designed.
