Surface EMG using ADS1192

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1192, ADS1292, ADS1192ECG-FE, ADS1292ECG-FE

Is the ADS1192 suitable for Surface EMG data recording? The datasheet seems to indicate a generic E'X'G usage capability but the EVM  That being said, I'd like to know if there are any quirks to Surface EMG in particular that would prevent us from using this part. We intend to measure a pair of muscles, so the 2 channels with differential application should suffice.

Also, the User Guide doesn't seem to be clear on what is included as part of the kit and what will be required to take measurements for Surface EMG.

  • Hi Karthik,

Yes, the ADS1192 and its associated kit, the ADS1192ECG-FE could potentially be used for EMG applications.  The main concern you have with this is the signal level of the surface EMG and the noise associated with the ADS1192, which is 24 uVpp.  The ADS1292 is also a 2-channel device and has 3x lower noise (8 uVpp).  In either case, you may have to implement an additional gain stage ahead of the data converter since EMG signals can be in the noise floor of the converters.

The ADS1192ECG-FE and ADS1292ECG-FE kits use the same base board; the only difference is in the chip installed on the PCB itself.  There is software to control the board available for download from the product tool folder.  There are no leads or electrodes included in the kit, so you would have to provide your own.  The lead interface is a female 9-pin 'D' connector.  You could build your own mating cable or Figure 48 in the User's Guide shows a 4 Lead cable option that you can buy through one of our local sub-contractor partners.  Details on that can be found at this web-site

  • Hi Tom,

I found your answer very clarifying. I am trying to achieve the same thing as Karthik. You suggested a gain stage for EMG signals, so I was wondering if you could recommend a part number? Also would it still be a differential config in the ADS1292? is there any suggestion of the config bits for EMG? and what about the RLD?

    Best Regards!

    Carlos.

  • Hi Carlos,

Take a look Figures 16 and 17 in the datasheet and at this post for some amplifier ideas:
