AMC7812B DC Specs

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AMC7812B, PCM1681, PCM1803, AMC7834, AMC7836

Hi E2E,

I have a customer who's evaluating the AMC7812B to replace the PCM1681 and PCM1803 due to their poor DC performance.  How's the DC performance on the AMC7812B?

For a typical signal of +/- 300mV (+/- 8%), are there any risks for this new part?

Thanks,

-Sam

  • Howdy Sam,

Most of the DC specifications can be found on page 4 an 5 of the datasheet.  I've provided a link below, if you have any questions please let me know.

    Best Regards,

    Matt

  • Matt,

Thanks. Yeah I saw those, but most of those specs aren't available to compare in the PCM1681 and PCM1803 datasheets. The gain error is much better for the AMC7812B but I don't know the PCM specs for INL, DNL, offset error.... so it's hard to compare.

But a higher level question, would the AMC7812B have any DC issues with the signal mentioned above?
  • Howdy Sam,

The AMC7812B is not a suitable candidate to replace an Audio DAC, the PCM1681.  May I ask the end application, and how the AMC7812B was referred?

    Best Regards,

    Matt

  • Matt,

The DAC is being used to monitor varying DC voltages so the DC specs are the most important. The customer found the AMC7812B and wanted a second opinion as to whether or not it would work better than the PCM1681 in his application. From what I've seen, the AMC7812B should work better than the PCM1681 for DC monitoring. Do you agree?

  • Howdy Sam,

I think I understand the application a little better now. I incorrectly assumed that it was related to audio, and therefore would have many AC performance requirements (THD, SNR, etc). But if DC performance is the top requirement, then yes the AMC product line (AMC7812B, AMC7836, AMC7834) is definitely the one to choose from.

The AMC7812B device has 12 DAC Channels with a muxed 16 channel 12-bit SAR ADC core. Is 12-bit resolution enough for their application. Can you give us more insight into the wanted DC specifications of the end customer, what parameters are their largest concern? (Offset, gain error, INL/DNL)

This information will be very helpful.

    Thank you,
    Matt
