Description of the problem: Is a pullup required on the ALARM pin even if it is not used? Data sheet just says required.

Thanks for so succinctly and precisely explaining your question!

If the ALARM pin is not used the pull-up resistor is not required. The pin is an open-drain digital output so the resistor is only required if the pin is going to be used to establish the logic-high state.
