ADS1299: for extracellular recording

Part Number: ADS1299
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , ADS1298

Greetings,

I would like to record the neuron's activity with 8-channel implanted electrodes in rats. Is this kit (ADS1299-PDK) suitable for such type of recordings. The frequency of the interested signal lays in the bandwidth from 500 Hz up to 5-7 kHz, amplitude is micro-mV. Do I require the external amplifiers and filters?

I am waiting for you answer.

Thank you in advance,

Olga.

  • Hello Olga,

Unfortunately the ADS1299EEGFE-PDK is an evaluation module for the ADS1299 so TI cannot recommend its use for anything besides evaluating the performance of the chip.

I believe even if you could, the ADS1299 itself is not fast enough to collect the data you want. The fastest data rate is 16 kSPS - at which the internal digital filter has a bandwidth of approximately 4 kHz. The ADS1298 can sample faster (up to 32 kSPS), but you may need a gain stage to get the noise performance you require. Please refer to the datasheet to see the noise performance of that device.

    Regards,
    Brian
