ADS8318: Operating Free Air temperature range

What is the reference to the operating free air temperature range?  Is it the air around the IC / board or is it the case temperature, or is it the junction temperature.

    Hi John,

    The free-air operating temperature range is the ambient temperature which the device can be exposed to when in operation.

    Hence it is temperature that the outer casing of the device (including solder pads) can be exposed to when in operation. The mechanism for heat transfer can be anything - including air around the device and board heat.
