ADS124S08: Multiple channels to be used in the ADC chip

Part Number: ADS124S08
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS124S06, , ADS1248, ADS131A04, ADS1274, ADS131A02, ADS1278

Hi there,

I have question related to the multiple channels of ADS124S08. In the data sheet, it states that "An input multiplexer supports 12 inputs for the ADS124S08 and six inputs for the ADS124S06 that can be connected to the ADC in any combination for design flexibility." However, by configure the "Input Multiplexer Register" (on Page 71 of the datasheet), the user can only have one specific input setting. Does it mean there is no way to do multiple channels ADC simultaneously? For example, the user wants to do ADC for three channels at the same time, but the chip can only take the one Positive ADC input and one Negative ADC input at one time.

  • Dan,

With the input multiplexer, the ADS1248 is able to measure 12 single ended measurements referenced to a common input (like AINCOM) or 6 differential measurements. Since the inputs are independently selected, you can make combinations of measurement.

However, there is only one ADC in the device, so multiple channels are read one at a time. To be able to read many channels simultaneously, you would need multiple ADCs in the device.

If you require simultaneous measurements with multiple channels, there are other devices that use more than one ADC. The ADS1274, ADS1278, ADS131A02, and ADS131A04 all have multiple ADCs, without using a multiplexer.
