ADS42B49EVM: Recommendation for DSP application

Part Number: ADS42B49EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS42B49, ADS42LB49

Heys everyone,

I'm currently selecting ADCs in the range of 100s of MSPS, and I stumbled upon the ADS42B49EVM. Saw that in the overall parameters is pretty neat, but I wanted to hear your opinion on this matter before I order it.

For the application I'm gonna analyze a frequency in the range of 10kHz and 10MHz, and the data has to be obtained under the time of 5 ms.

As this ADC has a 250MSPS rate, it's clearly beyond twice the maximum input frequency, so no problem with that.

Nonetheless, I'm having some concerns in the low frequency ranges as other datasheets I've looked into textually say that they work from DC to certain frequency; and I wouldn't want to lose any sampled frequency on the desired range (10k-10MHz) by the implementation of a low-pass filter or something that I can't see.

Any advice on this matter?

I read up these documents that were pretty useful, but since I'm on the middle of SARs and Pipeline architectures I've been focusing on Pipeline as an overkill for the application.

Thanks everyone, hope to hear about your thoughts on this matter.

Alan.

  • Alan,

Are you interested in the performance of the ADS42B49 at low frequency inputs? Can you elaborate more on your last sentence? I am not sure if you are leaning towards a SAR device or pipeline part. You may want to post you question in the precision data converter forum for more options if you are leaning towards a SAR part.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Jim,
The SAR and Pipeline each have an specific range of frequencies in which they can work. For example Pipeline can usually be found to be used in the range of 10MSPS which theoretically you can sample until 5MHz; nonetheless SARs range from kSPS to several MSPS not getting towards the tens of MSPS.
My question is (maybe it's pretty basic, but what the heck I prefer to learn from the best) am I going to have any problem with the Pipeline architecture if I'm going to sample frequencies in the ranges of 10kHz to 10MHz? If I'm not going to have any problems, is the ADS42B49EVM a good ADC for that frequency range application?
    Thank you,
    Alan.
  • Alan,

The ADS42LB49 can reliably sample signals in the 10kHz to 10MHz range.
