DAC3171: Are the solutions provided in sbaa135 applicable to DAC3171?

Part Number: DAC3171
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DAC3174

Hi,

For my design, I need to have a DC coupled DAC3171, interfacing it with an OPAMP to have a differential to single ended output. I have been reading the application report sbaa135 which is very useful but it says that it is for complementary current output DACs..

Is this solution valid for current source DACs such as the DAC3171?

Is there any difference between current source and complementary current outputs?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Kind regards,

  • Hi,

A complementary current output DAC will be one of two possible variants: a current sink DAC or a current source DAC.  The difference between then is that a current sink DAC will have the external connection to supply and the current sink (ground) is in the DAC, while a current source DAC has the supply in the DAC and sink (ground) is external.  So in that document the Figure 1 is an example of a current sinking DAC, while Figure 2 and the rest of the document is of the current source type.   Since the DAC3174 is a current source DAC, the document should be of direct benefit for you I believe.

Another example of a current source DAC into a number of different output structures is http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/tiduc44/tiduc44.pdf

  • Hi Richard,

Thanks for your reply. It makes sense now.
