ADS8866: Any limitations on no. of ADCs in daisy chain mode operation?

Part Number: ADS8866

Hi,

I wanted to know if there is any limitations on the no. of devices used in daisy chain mode operation ?

If the limitation is due the digital host/microcontroller then what are the things/specs which I should look for before selecting it?

I want to use five such ADCs in daisy chain!

Waiting for the reply!

Thanks!

  • Hello Yash,

Strictly speaking, there is no a specific limit on the number of devices that can be placed on daisy chain.

However, a total of 16xN SCLK falling edges are required to read the conversion data of all devices in the daisy chain (where N is the number of devices on daisy chain); therefore, the more devices on daisy chain, the slower the throughput since the data is read serially.  One physical limitation, the host controller has to be able to drive the load capacitance and trace capacitance of all the devices in the CNVST and SCLK lines/pins.  It should be possible to place 5 devices in serial change provided that the reduced data throughput is acceptable in the application.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Luis
