ADS1247: burn-out detect

Part Number: ADS1247

How to use bur-out detect? how to set following register?what current source is ok?

  • Longchang,

The burnout sensor detection uses two small current sources attached to the AINP and AINN inputs of the device. If you look at the ADS1247 datasheet, they are connected as shown in Figure 51 at the front end of the PGA.

If the sensor is burned out and the impedance becomes high, these currents will pull the inputs apart. If the sensor is burned out, and you take an ADC reading while the burnout current sources are turn on, the ADC should read full scale (7FFFFFh) because the inputs have been pulled apart and the ADC inputs are over ranged.

The ADS1247 has three different burnout current source settings:  0.5uA, 2uA, and 10uA. Different current sources are available and can be used if the burned out sensor is not completely open.

More information can be found in the ADS1247 datasheet under the Sensor Detection section (9.3.9) on page 34.
