PGA900: Which one is faulty? PGA900EVM, PGA900GUI or USB2ANY

Part Number: PGA900
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: USB2ANY

Hi.

I cannot seem to be able to get the pga900 evm GUI to communicate with the pga900 chip.

It was working fine previously but it somehow just stopped working & I bought a new pga900 chip & still I cannot load firmware on the chip which is frustrating.

Previously when it was working, when the micro is in reset I could read alternating rows of 0x55 and 0xAA in the EEPROM.

I am now not sure if the Evaluation module or usb2any or the GUI is not working. I have downloaded the GUI on another PC and it is the same result.

Is there any way I can check if the usb2any is faulty or if the EVM is faulty? How can I tell which is faulty?

My jumper configuration is 0-10V voltage mode (default configuration except J12 is open & J13 is closed)

  • Hi Kev,

To begin, is the LED from the USB2ANY board still lit when it is plugged into the PC?

Also, what is the current draw that you see on the power supply that you have connected to the EVM?

Additionally I would also check Pin 6 of connector J4 on the USB2ANY board. This should be providing +3.3V. Pin 6 of connector J5 on the USB2ANY should provide +5V. If these are not working, there is very likely a problem with the USB2ANY board.

Check these first, and let me know what you find. Hopefully this can help us narrow down which board is having trouble.

    Regards,
  • Hi Scott

    1. Is the LED from the USB2ANY board still lit when it is plugged into the PC?

    - Yes

    2. What is the current draw that you see on the power supply that you have connected to the EVM?

    - 0.022A @10Vdc I do not think it is any different to when it was working before & If I replace the chip with a new one it is the same current draw)

    3. Check Pin 6 of connector J4 on the USB2ANY board. This should be providing +3.3V. Pin 6 of connector J5 on the USB2ANY should provide +5V.

-Both pins provide close to 0V when the GUI is not launched but as soon as I launch the GUI & it says USB2ANY connected, they seem to be providing the correct voltage (+3.29V & 4.98V). I also connected the EVM & the +5V EXT TP48 and +3.3V EXT Tp52 are both okay.

Aditionally, I have checked the Micro test points connection to the micro pins just in case the micro is not being connected by the case/holder and there is good contact between the pga900 to the correct pins.

I have also checked the 10-30V input power for the EVM and all the regulators are giving the correct voltages (7.5V,5V & 3.3V) on T1,T3 AND T4. I have checked the resistive bridge Capacitors and Resistors & they all seem to have correct values. I have checked all the jumper connectors & all of them are fine. The only thing I cannot verify if it is working is the OWI and U1 (digital pot) but I am going to use my own sensor and I have been using the default SPI Communication from the GUI.

  • Hi.

I have done more tests and this is what I have found, I need some help.

    1. With the EVM not powered & USB2ANY not connected:

    • I only get continuity on the gnd (Tp39) & (Tp2) & (Tp44) pins which seems okay.

    2. With EVM at 10V and USB2ANY not connected:

    • I get continuity between gnd and vdd (Tp20) 9.99 V between the two.
    • I also get continuity between gnd and fbn (Tp42) which seems okay. No other pins are connected.

    3. With EVM at 10V and USB2ANY connected but not powered:

    • I get continuity between ground pins and Vout Tp30 -  (2.3V measured between them)
    • I get continuity if I measure any combination of all of these pins CSN, SCL, MOSI and SDA and there is 0V measured between which surely I do not know if this is right (does this mean the USB2ANY is shortcircuit-ing the pins?)
    • I get continuity between gnd and MISO Tp14 (16 ohm) , SCL Tp16 (0.4 ohm) , SDA Tp15 (0.5 ohm), SCLK Tp17 (1.5 ohm) and CSN (1.2 ohm) pins
    • I get continuity between VDD and all of the pins ranging from 6.95-9.99V (9.99V between VDD and CSN, SCL and SDA)

    4. With EVM at 10V and USB2ANY connected and powered.

    • I get continuity on gnd to SDA SCL CSN MOSI and FBN.
    • There is 10V Between gnd and vdd but no continuity.
    • continuity between MISO, CSN, MOSI, MISO, SCL, SCLK and SDA
    • 4 to 50 ohms between MOSI, MISO,SCL and SDA pins)

    5. With EVM not powered and USB2ANY not powered

    • I get continuity between gnd and (SDA, SCL,CSN and SCLK)
    • I get continuity on these pins SCL to CSN (1 ohm) and SDA to SCL(2 ohm)

I hope this helps to narrow down the problem & please let me know what any of the above means? I am suspecting that I have a problem with the USB2ANY, if so then where can I get a replacement? since I cannot seem to find them being sold anywhere.

  • sorry to bother you but do you have anymore feedback? & how I can get the usb2any if it is the one that is faulty
