ADS7828: ADS7828 Reference for use at 5v

Part Number: ADS7828

ADS7828

All:

If the ADS7828 is powered from 5v supply, can the internal 2.5 volt reference be used, OR does it require using an external 5V reference?

  • Datasheet: "The ADS7828 can operate with an internal 2.5V reference or an external reference. If a +5V supply is used an external reference is required in order to provide full dynamic range for a 0V to +Vdd analog input." However, if the inputs are kept below 2.5V, could the 2.5V reference be used with a 5V supply? I am seeing more uncertainly in the ADC values when using 2.5V internal reference with 5V supply.
  • Hi Todd,

With a +5V supply, either the internal 2.5V reference or an external reference can be used.

As you've already noted, if the inputs are kept below 2.5V when using the internal reference you should not encounter any problems. Similarly, if an external 5V reference is used then the inputs can be up to 5V.
