ADS1298RECGFE-PDK: Problem with ECG signal

Part Number: ADS1298RECGFE-PDK

Dear sirs,

I am a PhD students in Department of Human Physiology without proper experience in the microelectronics. Now, we are trying to do ECG recording system for small animal.

I use ADS1298RECGFE-PDK kit in I Lead configuration. I tried to obtain ECG on myself and everything worked perfect. However, when I tried to record from anesthetized frog, I had only noisy line. I used custom made DB-15 connector, with 3 electrodes (Red - pin9, Yellow - pin10, Black - pin 6,15) ) soldered to pins according the scheme in attached images (see photo).

Could you please give me any advices about the cause and how to resolve this problem. Does it occur due to smaller size of frog heart.

Thank you in advance.

Olga.

  • Hi Olga,

    Thanks for your post!

Unfortunately, we don't have any personal experience with ECG applications for animals. It may be that the ECG signals are smaller in amplitude, or perhaps the skin-electrode impedance is higher than it would otherwise be for humans. We just don't know what to expect in this case.

If you're confident in the signal chain components and the ADC configuration, then my only suggestion would be to improve the contact quality of the electrodes, either by a conductive gel or larger electrodes with more surface area.

    Best Regards,
