ADS8688: Long cable ADC signal measurement

Part Number: ADS8688

Hi, all. One of my customers want to use ADS8688 to measure long cable AD signal (DC voltage), the distance is about 15m.  And system has 0.5 ms to measure the voltage. Is that OK for this design? And if it is not suitable, what kind of ADC can we recommend to measure this signal?  Thanks a lot!

  • Hi Charles,

It's hard to say whether the ADC is okay or not because don't know what your system accuracy required is, what input signal is and other information. I think the best way is, to choose a proper ADC and the customer can check with our EVM board, then the customer can design and make their own board. Can you please let me know following information:

    1. What's your input signal level?

    2. How many channels does the customer need? 8-channels?

    3. Is Non-simultaneous-sampling ADC required?

    4. what's sampling rate per channel?

    Thanks.

    Best regards

    Dale

  • Hi Dale,

    Thank you for your support.
    1. The input signal level of customer is 0-10V. System accuracy 0.1% is enough.
    2. The customer now only need one channel to measure DC voltage, but he will use more in the future.
    3. Yes, no need for the non-simultaneous-sampling.
    4. He did not mention the sampling rate. He only cares about the 0.5 ms to measure the voltage.
I am curious about what aspects should we care more when using ADC in the long cable AD voltage measure (such as 15m). And we have some solution about this situation? Thanks a lot!
  • Hi Charles,

Thanks for your information. I don't know how worse your signal after 15m long cable, so I suggest you to buy a ADS8681EVM(single channel) or ADS8688EVM (8 channel) board to test, then you can design your own circuit board, we can help to check your schematic when you finish. Thanks.

Different ADC family for multi-channel input:

    ADS8688 family:   Non-simultaneous-sampling, multi-channel input

    ADS8588 family:   Simultaneous-sampling, multi-channel input

    Best regards
