ADS1232: ADS1232

Part Number: ADS1232

Hi,

For a weighing scale project I want to use ADS1232 ADC. I The sensitivity of load cell is 2mV/V +-0.2V. The load cell capacity is 120Kg and resolution required is 30000. As per my calculation the load cell will output 333nV/gram. Now the question is can I use ADS1232 for our application.

With ADS1232 can we read the data every 400ms?

Thanks,

Sreekanth

  • Hi Sreekanth,

The ADS1232 datasheet has a noise-free counts calculation based on full-scale range of the ADC as it relates to the full-scale range of the load cell. This discussion is on page 24 under Weigh-Scale System. Depending on the desired data rate and excitation/reference voltage you can calculate to see if you can meet the desired level of resolution. However, this calculation is for the response of the ADC only and does not include external noise sources such as EMI/RFI that can greatly degrade overall performance. The example shown is very similar to your system using a 2mV/V sensitivity and 5V excitation/reference. The example also uses some averaging to reduce noise, but even without averaging you should be able to achieve 30000 counts noise-free.

The data rates for the ADS1232 are 10sps (100ms period) or 80sps (12.5ms period) so you should be able to use the 10sps rate and get the highest performance from the ADC.

    Best regards,
