ADS1115: Current detection system through ADS1115 sensor interface with arduino

Part Number: ADS1115

Hello, I have the ADS1115 sensor and I want to test current detection solution by interfacing it Arduino and test the AA battery current values, would it be possible to make this kind of solution work?

what other precaution I have to take care when I need to test the current in 24 V DC battery or through AC power supply?

any suggestion which helps me to use this AD converter with good circuit design to prevent it from short circuit will be very helpful to create the current detection solution interfacing with Arduino.

  • Robson,

Certainly, the ADS1115 can be made to make current sourced from a battery. Generally, you need to consider some sort of shunt resistor to measure the battery output. You'll also need to consider the power supply voltage. If you are measuring 2 or 3 AA batteries in series, you can power the ADS1115 off of the batteries themselves. The ADS1115 may be powered from a VDD anywhere from 2V to 5.5V.

I would note that if you are trying to measure battery current from a 24V source. The 24V side of the battery cannot be measured directly from this device. The ADC input (either AINP or AINN of the ADC) can only be set from GND-0.3V to VDD+0.3V. You would need to construct some sort of low side shunt measurement.

To make sure that you don't have any problems with over-ranging the device, I would look at the Absolute Maximum Ratings on page 6 of the datasheet. Beyond these ratings, you risk damaging the device.

Once you have an idea of what you want to measure, post back with more details of how you want to construct your circuit. It always helps to have a clear idea of what it is you want to measure and what type of circuit you want to put together.

  • Actualy I am tryoing to measure the battery current form this hardwar but the problem as it consumes very low voltage. Any best and easy circuit which will help me to measure the current range as per my requirement if I want to use it with arduino ?
  • Robson,

You said that the hardware "consumes very low voltage". Do you mean that the hardware consumes very low current for operation? or do you mean that the operating voltage is very low. Regardless, what magnitude of current or voltage are you measuring?

I'll need more specific details and an expected range of operation to help you. A brief writeup of the system would be very helpful.
